Do driving instructors need consent to send SMS lesson reminders?
In Etisia, yes: during setup you confirm that you have permission to text the people you remind, so tell them at booking that you'll text a reminder. If someone asks to stop, mark them as opted out in Etisia Contacts. For simple lesson reminders, the key point is to have an appropriate lawful basis, be transparent and use the learner's mobile number only in ways they would reasonably expect. Consent is not the only possible lawful basis for service reminders, but the business should decide and document the basis it relies on. What should a driving school include in its privacy notice?
A practical privacy notice should explain that you use names, contact details and booking information to manage lessons and send appointment reminders. ICO guidance says privacy information should include purposes, lawful basis, recipients or categories of recipients, retention periods and people's rights. Do PECR rules apply to SMS reminders?
Not to a plain appointment reminder: PECR is mainly about marketing, and Etisia refuses reminder wording that promotes to new customers. A routine lesson reminder is usually best treated as a service message, not a sales campaign. ICO guidance says routine customer-service messages do not count as direct marketing, but a text that includes significant promotional material aimed at selling extra services is marketing and PECR rules apply. What should not be included in a driving lesson SMS?
Avoid unnecessary details such as the lesson route, test preparation notes, instructor comments, progress, pass/fail comments, payment issues, licence numbers or personal circumstances. A good SMS usually only needs the business name, date, time and a cancellation link. This is especially sensible if a learner uses a parent's phone, shared phone or work phone.
When should driving lesson reminders be sent?
A useful setup is often one reminder the day before and one reminder on the day of the lesson, such as two to four hours before the booking. For early-morning lessons, an evening-before reminder may be more helpful. Avoid sending too many messages; the goal is to be useful, not annoying.
Can learners cancel from the SMS?
