When a driving lesson is missed, the diary slot is hard to reuse

A missed driving lesson is not just an empty space in the diary. For an independent instructor, it can mean reserved teaching time, travel time and vehicle availability that could not be offered to another learner at short notice. For a driving school, missed bookings can also affect instructor schedules across several calendars. Etisia helps by sending clear SMS reminders and giving learners a quick cancellation link, so your team has a better chance of knowing about changes before the slot is wasted.

For independent ADIs

A reminder the day before and shortly before the lesson can help learners remember the booking, check their plans and cancel in time if they genuinely cannot attend.

For driving schools

Add reminders to separate Google Calendars for different instructors, vehicles or branches, so each learner receives consistent text reminders without changing how your team manages the diary.

Fewer forgotten lessons Learners often book lessons around school, work, childcare, exams and family lifts. A short SMS reminder gives them the key details at the right moment: the date, time and what to do if they need to change the booking.

Easier cancellations A cancellation link makes it simpler for pupils to tell you they cannot attend, without needing to call while you are teaching. The sooner you know, the better chance you have of offering the slot to another learner or adjusting the day's route.

Less admin between lessons Driving instructors are often moving between pupils, vehicles, test centres and home pick-ups. Automated text reminders reduce the need for manual reminder messages, while keeping your Google Calendar as the diary your team already uses.

Works across instructors and calendars For small driving schools, each instructor can have their own Google Calendar. Etisia adds SMS reminders, cancellation links and optional feedback requests on top, without forcing the school to replace its booking, payment or pupil-progress tools.

Keep driving lesson reminders simple and privacy-aware

Learner names, mobile numbers, pick-up details and lesson notes can be personal information. For UK driving schools, SMS reminders should stay practical: business name, date, time and a cancellation or change link are usually enough.

  1. 01

    Service reminders

Routine lesson reminders can be written as customer-service messages. Keep them focused on the booking rather than adding package offers, discounts or sales copy.

  2. 02

    Privacy notice fit

Be transparent about how you use learner contact details, choose an appropriate lawful basis and avoid putting unnecessary lesson details in SMS messages.

  3. 03

    Review requests

Feedback and Google review requests should be neutral, voluntary and sent consistently to eligible learners, not only to people expected to leave positive comments.

Ask for feedback without making it feel pushy

After a completed lesson or course, Etisia can send a short, neutral message asking the learner to share feedback or leave a Google review. Keep the request voluntary and consistent. Do not ask only selected learners, do not offer discounts or gifts, and do not suggest what rating or wording the learner should use. Some driving schools may prefer to invite private feedback first, especially when they want to resolve concerns before asking for public reviews. Google allows businesses to share a review link or QR code, but says reviews should reflect genuine experiences and incentives are strictly prohibited. Google review link guidance

Neutral by default

Use wording such as "Feedback is optional" rather than asking for a specific rating.

Private feedback option

Offer a private feedback link where appropriate, so learners can raise concerns without feeling pushed into a public review.

No selective requests

Send review requests consistently to eligible learners, not only to people you think will leave positive comments.

Review and feedback requests should stay voluntary, neutral, consistent and incentive-free.

Simple plans for small and midsize service businesses that don't want another complicated booking system

Keep Google Calendar as the main calendar your team works from. Etisia adds reminders, review requests, and one-tap cancellations without a new booking system or workflow builder.

Frequently asked questions

The practical details before you try Etisia.

Do driving instructors need consent to send SMS lesson reminders?
For simple lesson reminders, the key point is to have an appropriate lawful basis, be transparent and use the learner's mobile number only in ways they would reasonably expect. Consent is not the only possible lawful basis for service reminders, but the business should decide and document the basis it relies on. ICO guidance says UK GDPR processing must be lawful, fair and transparent, and that organisations should tell people their purposes and lawful basis in privacy information. ICO lawful basis guidance
What should a driving school include in its privacy notice?
A practical privacy notice should explain that you use names, contact details and booking information to manage lessons and send appointment reminders. ICO guidance says privacy information should include purposes, lawful basis, recipients or categories of recipients, retention periods and people's rights. Keep it simple, but make sure learners know how their mobile number will be used. ICO privacy information guidance
Do PECR rules apply to SMS reminders?
A routine lesson reminder is usually best treated as a service message, not a sales campaign. ICO guidance says routine customer-service messages do not count as direct marketing, but a text that includes significant promotional material aimed at selling extra services is marketing and PECR rules apply. PECR covers marketing by text, and ICO guidance says consent often needs to be clear, specific and easy to withdraw. ICO PECR guidance
What should not be included in a driving lesson SMS?
Avoid unnecessary details such as the lesson route, test preparation notes, instructor comments, progress, pass/fail comments, payment issues, licence numbers or personal circumstances. A good SMS usually only needs the business name, date, time and cancellation/change link. This is especially sensible if a learner uses a parent's phone, shared phone or work phone.
When should driving lesson reminders be sent?
A useful setup is often one reminder the day before and one reminder on the day of the lesson, such as two to four hours before the booking. For early-morning lessons, an evening-before reminder may be more helpful. Avoid sending too many messages; the goal is to be useful, not annoying.
Can learners cancel from the SMS?
Yes. Etisia can include a cancellation link so the learner can cancel or request a change without making a phone call. Treat this as a practical admin tool, not a guaranteed way to refill every slot.
Does Etisia replace driving-school software?
No. Etisia is an SMS layer for Google Calendar. It does not replace booking software, payment tools, pupil-progress records, instructor notes or accounting systems. This is useful for instructors who already use Google Calendar and do not want to rebuild their workflow.
Can a driving school send Google review requests by SMS?
Yes, but keep them neutral and voluntary. Google says businesses can ask customers to use a Google link or QR code to leave reviews, but reviews must reflect genuine experiences and incentives are prohibited. Google also prohibits selectively soliciting positive reviews or discouraging negative ones. Google Business Profile review guidance
